Barry has over forty years retail experience significantly in Senior or General Manager positions with both the Coles Myer and Woolworths groups, prior to being appointed Chief Executive Officer of both public and private companies. He currently acts as Chairman for 3 significant Australian companies. These are:- Crest Electronics, Australia’s dominant importer and distributor of consumer Electronic accessories. The Vac Group, whose primary business is the contracting of vacuum excavation and cleaning services through its own fleet of dedicated vacuum excavators; and the Alcohol and Drug Foundation Queensland (ADFQ) who provides counselling and rehabilitation services for people affected by Drugs, Alcohol and other forms of addiction in Queensland. Appointed as Chief Executive of Freedom Furniture in 1997 he was seen by many to be the driving force in transforming the logistics, IT, and stores presentation of this public company over the next two years. Barry left Freedom in 2000 and was approached to develop and ultimately head Cyberlynx as Chief Executive. Since that time Barry has acted as Chairman of an ecommerce company in the hospitality industry and acted as Joint Venture Director for Lion Nathan in that industry, and as Chair of TEC 23 [The Executive Connection] for 3 years, coaching and mentoring CEOs to enhance their lifestyle. He was awarded in 2 of those 3 years for excellence. Barry has a rare combination of experience from grass roots retailer, to CEO of public and private companies. He has broad as well as specific experience in Logistics, IT, Ecommerce and Hospitality. A capable facilitator and team leader, Barry is driven to producing positive outcomes in large and small businesses. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and Member of the Retail Management Institute of Australia as well as Past President of the Rotary Club of Logan (Qld).
Mrs Cheryl Herbert was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of the recently formed Health Quality and Complaints Commission in September 2006 and has extensive health leadership and management experience. Prior to leading the Health Quality and Complaints Commission, Cheryl had 10 years’ CEO experience as Executive Director of Spiritus Care Services which comprised the recently merged St Luke’s Nursing Service, Anglicare and Anglican Care of the Aged and previously CEO of St Luke’s Nursing Service. Cheryl has qualifications in nursing and midwifery and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Nurses Australia, Associate Fellow of the Australian College of Health Care Executives and an adjunct Associate Professor of University of Queensland. Cheryl has been noted as an innovative and collaborative industry leader. She has worked closely with some of Australia’s near neighbours to share skills and expertise, and has served on the following panels/Boards: Queensland Health Reform Panel, Forster Inquiry into Queensland Health, Australian Pharmaceutical Advisory Council, National Nursing Workforce and Education planning, Anglicare Australia, Anglicare NT, Bayside District Health Service Council, ACQI, and has accompanied the Australian Ministers for Ageing and Foreign Affairs in 1998, 2000 and 2002 to Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan to showcase Australian Aged Care. She presently retains membership on the board of Alcohol and Drug Foundation of Queensland, External Advisory Council, School of Nursing & Midwifery, University of Queensland and ACHS State Advisory Committee.
Damian Wright is a chartered accountant and Audit Partner with BDO Chartered Accountants. He has been working in the Accounting Profession for some 20 Years and provides services for a wide range of businesses in a variety of industries.
Allan is a lawyer by profession, having been in continuous practice for in excess of 40 years. His interest in alcohol related issues commenced with his membership of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, initially in connection with the operation of a hostel for homeless persons in Margaret Street, Brisbane and, subsequently, at new premises at South Brisbane. In his capacity as chair of a committee that established and managed a half-way house for recovering alcoholics at Auchenflower, Brisbane, he was a participant in the consultation process relating to the overhaul of he strategies and facilities for the prevention and treatment of alcohol related illnesses in Queensland. The hands-on experience gained through these activities provided valuable insights concerning the issues that are at the core of the activities and interests of ADFQ. Allan is married with an adult family and his interests include art, literature, travel and sport.
Dr Smeeton commenced work at the Australian Red Cross Blood Service - QLD in early 1997. Prior to this she worked as a Public Health Physician in New Zealand both as a regional Medical Officer of Health and as a Clinical Director of Public Health within a hospital setting. Dr Smeeton has also worked as a general practitioner, and was a member of the Board of the New Zealand Public Health Commission, which set public health policy, and purchased public health services for delivery throughout New Zealand. Dr Smeeton is currently a Medical Adviser working in the Compensation area of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. Her interests outside of work include sport, camping, reading and being an active Rotarian. Judith is a lecturer in the Faculty of Health, Social Work and Human Services at Queensland University of Technology. She has taught in the undergraduate degrees for the past 10 years and commenced teaching in the new Master of Social Work course in 2010. Judith has an extensive human services background involving 17 years with the Department of Families, now Communities, mostly involved in child protection work at the specialist Crisis Care unit as well as acting in positions of policy, liaison and management. She has also been involved in the practice areas of child and family therapy, women’s prison, suicide, homelessness, parent/adolescent conflict, drug and alcohol addiction, counselling and domestic violence. Judith has just been elected President of the Australian Association of Social Workers Queensland Branch.
Dr Bolton graduated in Medicine from the University of Queensland in 1963 before practicing as a GP in Chinchilla through till the late 70s. In 1978 Dr Bolton commenced working for the Department of Health - Queensland in the Alcohol and Drug Dependence Services area before becoming the Director of Rural Health in 1989 and the Assistant Regional Director Brisbane North Regional Health Authority in 1991. Most recently Dr Bolton has been a practicing Medical Officer, Specialist Palliative Care Physician and Medical Advisor in various hospitals and health facilities throughout Australasia. Mr Lloyd Hassell (Director) B.Com, F.Fin, ASA Member of Australian Society of Accountants, Financial Services Institution of Australasia. Lloyd Hassell (now retired) spent almost ten years with the Bank of NSW in Rockhampton, Rabaul PNG and Brisbane CBD before joining JB Frank Charlton, where he spent almost 20 years in Stock Broking. An appointment with Nevitts, later taken over by Macquarie, saw Lloyd working as a Financial Advisor where he remained for approximately 10 years. Now retired, Lloyd retains membership with the Australian Society of Accountants, the Financial Services Institution of Australasia and is an active member of the Board of Directors of ADFQ. |
