| What is problem gambling? |

Problem gambling is gambling behaviour which can disrupt any major area of life: emotional, physical, social, financial, relationship or employment.
Severe problem gambling affects not only people who gamble, but also extends to partners, families and the broader community. Some of the consequences of problem gambling can include guilt, depression, suicide, debt, poverty, divorce and involvement in crime. Terms often used to describe problem gambling are “compulsive”, “addictive” and “pathological” as they provide insight into the lack of behavioural control and cognitive distortions that occur in some individuals. The public health model adopted by the Research and Community Education Division of the Queensland Office of Gaming Regulation goes beyond intra individual and bio medical assessments to include socio-economic, cultural and other environmental factors as possible influences of gambling behaviour.
